Hundreds of students at Bristol University banded together to give the cleaner a special gift as a way to show their appreciation for his loving kindness and joyfulness.
Herman Gordon, 65, is a beloved figure to the students at Bristol University in England.
Gordon, who has been working as a cleaner at the university for 12 years, is a ray of sunshine.
Possessing a positive and jolly attitude, he’s described by the students as the “epitome of happiness.”
In fact, Gordon made the most of every day, making the students happy, bringing them smiles.
Speaking to MailOnline, he said, “I don’t know anything about law or sciences but I know a bit about life. If I can motivate them a bit, then it makes me very happy.”
“I love those kids and care about them,” he added.
For these reasons, the students at Bristol University love him!
“The happy cleaner who always gives fist-bumps to students. I was honored to fist-bump him once! He is the spirit of the medical library,” Anh Hoang Le wrote.
And when the students learned Gordon—who came to the United Kingdom from Jamaica in 1967 at age 13—hadn’t returned home for the last nine years, they rallied around to help him.
#Bristruth10872We are so close to reaching our £1000 target of sending Herman to Jamaica!!! Please keep donating, even…
Medicine student Hadi Al-Zubaidi set up a JustGiving page to raise funds for Gordon so that he could visit his family in Jamaica with his wife.
“He spends the whole time being nice to everybody, it’s about time we were nice to him,” Al-Zubaidi told Newsbeat.
More than 230 students poured in donations. The fund almost reached its 1,500-pound (approx. US$1,937) goal in just five days.
One day in June, the students surprised Gordon with this special gift, accompanied with a letter of appreciation placed in a white envelope.
Gordon was instantly reduced to tears upon seeing the money inside the envelope.
“It was one of the most humbling moments of my life and I had tears streaming down my face,” Gordon said.
The letter from “Bristol Students” read, “Dear Herman, on behalf of the students of Bristol, we would like to thank you for all the positive energy you have given us throughout the years.”
“You have brightened many of our days, and we want you to know that we love and appreciate you. We have come together to give you a special gift as our way of saying thank you. Have a lovely summer!”
Here's our Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Hugh Brady, hand delivering a letter of thanks to the (now famous!)…
Kindness begets kindness. You reap what you sow. We’re glad Gordon received his reward, which he truly deserves, for spreading joy and loving kindness to all the people he comes across in life.
Kudos to the students for showing your appreciation!
**Update** After 12 years working at the University, our much-loved cleaner Herman Gordon will be retiring at the end…
