Alzheimer's Disease
Basic Info
Alzheimer’s disease is named after German pathologist Alois Alzheimer who discovered in 1906 the distinctive feature of the disease, which is plaque and other protein deposits in the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, an umbrella term for a multitude of symptoms affecting the brain functions. Memory loss is the major symptom of Alzheimer's disease. Scientists do not know the exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease, nor is there a cure. Medications may slow the progression of symptoms. In advanced stages of the disease, severe loss of brain function may be fatal. A healthy lifestyle, regular exercises and maintaining normal blood pressure can lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
