NEW YORK—In an otherwise sleepy 10-4 loss to the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, Yankees catcher Jorge Posada and Toronto Blue Jays reliever Jesse Carlson ignited a bloody brawl that engulfed both dugouts.
Carlson threw behind Posada on a pitch in the eighth inning, apparently in retaliation to the Yankees beaning two Blue Jays players earlier in the game. Benches cleared, but order was quickly restored.
Moments later, a brawl ensued as Posada jostled Carlson after he crossed the home plate following a run-scoring double by Brett Gardner.
“When (Posada) came by, he just threw a shoulder right into my shoulder and the umpire saw it,” Carlson told the Daily News. “During his at-bat, as well, every pitch he was fouling off, he just kept staring at me. And once he did that crossing the plate, I was like, ‘Let’s go.’”
The two wrestled on the ground and benches cleared. After the fracas, both Carlson and Posada were ejected, with suspension likely to follow from the commissioner’s office. Equipment was strewn all over the field behind home plate. Carlson wound up with a cut on his left forehead and was escorted out by his teammates.
Even Yankees manager Joe Girardi was subject to the violence. TV cameras caught an unidentified Blue Jay taking a swing at the head of the 44 year-old Girardi.
But Carlson denied that he threw at Posada intentionally. “It was a fastball in and I yanked it. Just a bad pitch,” he told reporters. “I’m not going to apologize. No need to.”
Toronto ace Roy Halladay won his 15th game this season while Sergio Mitre took the loss for the Yankees. With the win, Halladay is now 18-6 lifetime against New York.
The Blue Jays belted five home runs, two of them by left fielder Travis Snider. Mitre gave up seven earned runs in five innings, driving up his ERA to 7.63 for the season.
