Young Daughters Shave Their Heads for Air Force Mom Battling Breast Cancer

Certainly not all children have the emotional maturity to grasp the sacrifices their parents make to give them a better life—some may never reach that stage, in fact.

Which makes a pair of young sisters from Louisiana stand out from most others their age. Kayla and Sophia McPherson, aged 10 and 7 respectively, know that their mom, Joanna, who is also an Air Force colonel, no less, would do anything for them.

Joanna, a mother of four, was diagnosed with a form of breast cancer called HER2+, and was surprised by her daughters when they told her they wanted to shave their heads in order to show support for her during her chemo treatment.

They had told their dad, Shawn, first before asking her permission, and at first, Mom had many reservations.

“You don’t have to do this to support me,” Joanna had recalled telling her daughters.

“These discussions went on every day for about 8 weeks before I gave in,” Joanna wrote on her blog page, HER2 Positive Life.

She had previously undergone a double mastectomy after an initial diagnosis of ductal carcinoma, but afterward, in October 2018, she was given an additional diagnosis of HER2+ and was told that she would need chemotherapy for six months.

When Joanna’s hair had started falling out while undergoing chemo, though, a decision to shave her own head was a choice she had made as a way to take back what little control she had over her life.

“I couldn’t even cook, or kind of do everyday things without hair just kind of falling down,” Joanna told Inside Edition.

Weeks after Joanna shaved her own head, Kayla and Sophia decided to shave theirs as well to show solidarity for her.

“I thought, ‘Well, they probably don’t really know what they’re asking and after a few days it will kind of blow over and they won’t really want to follow through with it,’” said Joanne.

But Joanna was wrong, and soon enough, both sisters were taking turns sitting in the barber’s chair as Shawn went to town with a pair of clippers. Meanwhile, a video recorder captured the important occasion for posterity. It was a little bit nerve-wracking for Sophia as she watched her lovely locks zip off and fall to the floor row by row. But it was clearly a gesture motivated by the heart, as evidenced by their bright smiles and their purposeful words afterward.

“I would do anything for my mom, because she’s my mom,” Sophia told KSLA. “She’s kind, sweet, generous, she cares for me and she would do anything for me so I just want to show her how it feels.”
