The gift would change her life forever. Out of the blue, an Australian couple made an unbelievable offer that would ultimately put this waitress’s life back on track.
Cayla Chandara moved to Waikiki, Hawaii, to attend college. It was not easy for her to keep up with her student loan payments, and Cayla was soon left with no choice but to leave college and take up a job as a waitress. She was working 80 hours a week and always on her feet. Going back to college to pursue her career in business was no longer an option.
One day while working at her job at the Noi Thai Cuisine restaurant, an Australian couple came in, and as Cayla started to serve them, they began chatting, and Cayla told them a little about herself.
“They asked me where I was from, and I told them I moved here for school but I was kind of in a little bit of debt and I couldn’t go back to school because I couldn’t afford it and the cost of living here,” Cayla said.
After the couple left, Cayla glanced at their receipt, and to her utter amazement, they had left her a $400 tip on their $200 bill!
“I just thought it was so generous of them,” she said. “I never get tipped that big. I had to say thank you.” During their conversation, Cayla remembered the name of the hotel that they were booked in, and she decided to send them a thank-you card with a bunch of flowers and had dessert sent up to their room.
The next day, Cayla was busy tending to her tables as usual, when, to her astonishment, the couple walked into the restaurant again. What happened next would help her realize her dreams and fulfill her hopes for the future.
The couple spoke with Cayla and said they would like to pay off her student loan and also pay for the rest of her college education. The gift would amount to more than $10,000!
“I was like, ‘No way, you don’t have to do that for me. I just wanted to say thank-you,’” Cayla said, but they insisted.
“I still don’t feel like it’s real,” she added. “I want to run around in the streets.”
Then came something that could never be bought with money—they said they wanted nothing in return but only to “be your best possible self, dream big, and strive for your goals.”
Cayla said there were tears streaming down her face and even all the staff in the restaurant were overwhelmed by the couple’s generosity.
“I want to make them proud,” she said. “I will take this opportunity with an open heart and be a better person that I can be every day.”
Watch how Cayla thanked the amazing couple from Australia:
“They saw me as more than a waitress,” she said, speaking about the Australian couple who wished to remain anonymous.
The 21-year-old wants to thank the couple for not only helping her fulfill her dream of finishing and graduating college, but also for teaching her a valuable lesson.
“They have truly changed my life, not only financially but in the way I look at things. They are the most beautiful and kind-hearted people I’ve come across and I really look up to them and I can’t wait until they watch me graduate,” Cayla said, according to CBS.
She hopes that the story of their generosity reminds others that there are still good people in the world. Good things really do happen.
“Always be genuine,” Cayla said. “You will get it right back. Good things happen.”
Cayla plans to study business when she returns to school at the University of Hawaii, according to KWIQ.
The couple’s generosity has not only changed her life but also inspired her to open her heart and be a better person all around. She wants to live better every day and follow her dreams, determined to make the couple proud.
She plans to keep in touch with the couple and is looking forward to seeing her benefactors again when they return to Oahu in July, around the time of her 22nd birthday.
