NEW YORK—Popular online “microblogging” site known as Twitter was shut down for repair Thursday evening due to an unauthorized alteration to their homepage.
The suspected culprit involved in illegally altering the site, is a group of computer hackers from Iran. The self-proclaimed “Iranian Cyber Army” gained access to Twitter’s homepage, cut the connection to the designated login section for customers and added their own banner.
When Twitter fans went to access the page Thursday the area allocated for signing in was replaced with the statement “This site has been hacked by The Iranian Cyber Army.”
Twitter’s online community has gained interest from the American public and Internet users around the world due to growing celebrity involvement with micro-blogging. People are able to see what their favorite pop-culture icons are doing throughout the day, and users can correspond with their friends and family for free.
Twitter was started by Jack Dorsey in 2006. The site’s use of the Short Message Services (SMS) makes the service easy to use by cell phone, and the 140 character limit for the messages keeps things simple. The short messages on Twitter have been nicknamed “Tweets.”
These cyber bandits known as “The Iranian Cyber Army” belong to a section of the computer community known as “black hat” computer hackers which are known for breaking into computer networks through the Internet. Working against them the computer specialists at Twitter responsible for fixing security breaches; these specialists are known as “white hats.”
