January 29, 2014 Updated: July 18, 2015

A gas explosion in the basement of 101 Delaware Street has forced the evacuation of at least 18 homes in the Todt Hill section of Staten Island in New York City on Wednesday.

Both people inside the home are injured but in stable condition, reported ABC.

Crews are searching for the source of the gas leak.

The FDNY told Pix11 that the cause is believed to have been sewer gas.

The fire from the explosion had started by the time firefighters responded after a call around 5:02 p.m.

Staging areas have been set up at the intersection of Dalemere Road and Norden Street.

Buses are being sent to Duchess Avenue between Delaware and Norden Streets to pick up evacuated residents.

Evacuations were ordered in a three-block area around Overlook Avenue and Delaware Street.
