Singer at X-Factor Gets No From Simon. Then He Says, ‘Can I Do Something Before I Go?’

As we can’t win every battle in life, it takes heart to find the good even in a disappointing situation. It certainly was the case for this hopeful singer in Series 14 of The X Factor in the United Kingdom, who turned a “no” from the judges into an unforgettable moment.

Sam Black, from Liverpool, England, is an engaging and handsome young man who loves singing. That’s why in 2017, he left his job as a plasterer to spend a week at The X Factor’s boot camp in preparation for an audition to be on the show. However, he wasn’t feeling all that confident when it came time for the audition.

The driving force behind his dreams of stardom was his family and girlfriend. “If I could … make a better life for me and my family,” said an emotional Sam.

The song he chose, a rendition of Del Shannon’s “Runaway,” did not impress Simon Cowell, one of the judges: “I would not have advised you to sing this song,” he said, as he stopped the audition.

“Can I suggest that we just hear you … we slow the song down so at least we can hear a version of the song and hear your voice properly because this is going to be a struggle otherwise.”

Sam took it on the chin and started again but slower; however, the judges decided he wasn’t good enough to progress to the next stage of the competition.

Simon expressed his sentiments toward the young man despite having to turn him down, “I think people are gonna really like you … but we are gonna have to say no.”

To this, Sam responded: “Can I do something before I go? Because I’m never gonna get this chance.” Simon replied: “You can do whatever you want…”

It seemed Sam had something special planned while he was on stage: a surprise.

Simon granted Sam a chance to unveil his surprise. That’s when he asked his girlfriend, Emma Smith, to come up on stage while he got down on one knee and proposed live on the show. “Can I get a yes off you?” he asked.

Speechless, a surprised and tearful Emma nodded before Sam put the ring on her finger. Then, the couple embraced, with the audience roaring in the background. The proposal caught the judges unawares, leaving Nicole Scherzinger and Sharon Osbourne nearly in tears.

“You’ve got yourself one heck of a nice guy there, Emma,” Simon said, as the newly engaged couple left the stage.

Emma later told MailOnline: “It was one big shock, it was the last thing I was expecting. I was completely overwhelmed.” She added: “Of course I said yes, it was such a special moment, one I won’t ever forget.”

As for netizens’ comments stating that the proposal was staged as they noticed Emma wearing a microphone pack on her back, an X Factor spokesperson explained to MailOnline: “All friends and family that are sat in the audience are, as a rule, mic’d up so audiences at home can enjoy their reactions to the auditions.”

Even though his singing career was over before it started, Sam kept his head high and transformed a moment of disappointment into one of rejoicing.

Congratulations to Sam and Emma!
