There are some cops who just go above and beyond their call of duty to help people in the hour of need. However, many of their selfless acts often tend to go unnoticed. A Tennessee resident shared a post that has won many hearts on social media.
Elizabeth McClain and her friend Patti Walker were having lunch when they noticed a homeless man sitting out in the heat. He was lonely and hungry.
A police car then pulled over at the side off the highway and the two friends saw a deputy from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office walk towards him. While the onlookers were left wondering what had gone wrong, the officer suddenly sat by the homeless man and began to share his lunch with him.
The incident would’ve made any passersby stop in their tracks and take a moment to reflect. “I don’t know this man or this officer, but what I do know is that today they made a difference,” McClain wrote on Facebook.
Imagine this you are sitting on the side of the road and for whatever reason everything you own can fit in a backpack….
The officer, identified as William Haley, works as a school resource officer at Jackson Careers and Technology. But on that day he was out fulfilling his other duties.
“That’s something I do if I see someone in need and I’m able to help,” Haley told The Jackson Sun. “I do it if I’m working, and I’ve done it a few times when I wasn’t working.”
He added: “That’s just what I think we ought to do when we can … be kind and show kindness to one another however we can. It just so happened this time someone took a picture and shared it on Facebook.”
The officer had spotted the man a couple of times when he was on his rounds in the morning. He then decided that if he was still there when he got lunch, he would buy him one too.
Haley could’ve simply given him the food and driven off. But he sat down with the man and began a conversation with him, thereby driving off his loneliness too.
He said: “We sat down right there and talked about life, the military, where he’d been, where he was going. It was a good experience for me, and hopefully, for him, too.”
For Haley, a former Marine, serving the community comes naturally to him—it’s part of his training. His actions remind us that at the end of the day we’re all just human, and everyone deserves love and respect.
“That was me being kind,” Haley said. “If all of us could do it, it would make for a better county, state, country and world.”
McClain, who was clearly touched on that day, shared: “Our beliefs or opinions shouldn’t affect how we treat other people. We all need each other and it’s about time we pick ourselves up off ground and start acting like it.”
Indeed, netizens couldn’t agree more. McClain’s heartwarming post has since garnered 151,000 likes and been shared over 140,000 times.
One user wrote, “Wonderful act of kindness and concern for fellow man by that police officer.”
Another commented, “Thank you for protecting and serving! I wish there were more police officers like you!”
This is the side of cops that we don’t get to see very often. Officers like Haley are true role models who people can learn and strive to emulate.
