The young woman was born with a rare condition that resulted in her  having birthmarks all over her body. And despite being shamed by the people around her, she stands tall, living life on her own terms.

Maria Isabel Olivieri, a ballet dancer from Spain, had a very difficult childhood, being raised by a father who tried to hide her away in their home and never let anyone see her.

“My father blamed my mother for being born like this and was always hiding me, I felt ashamed,” she said, reports MailOnline.

Maria’s problems began as soon as she was born. Freckles began to appear, and eventually, her entire body was covered with birthmarks. As a result, most of her childhood was spent in hospitals, trying to manage the problem.

She underwent 40 operations to remove marks that prevented her from being able to move freely. She even had a giant mark, which ran from the bottom of her knee to her back. Fortunately, this was operated on.

Maria outgrew her low self-esteem when she began to realize that there are people who are in far worse situations than she was. She was at least blessed with two legs, arms, etc., but there were many who have none of these “luxuries.”

This understanding and perspective gave her peace of mind, and Maria soon began to walk on the streets, assured of her own identity, in spite of many people staring at her.

“The conclusion I have reached is that no matter what people will always look at you for something, if you’re too tall, short, fat or thin, so I looked in the mirror once and decided I would be glad for people looking at me,” she said.
