Stories of neglect and abandonment never fail to fill hearts with agony. It’s hard to imagine the fate of these dogs that have been abandoned by their owners. When a neglected dog was found abandoned, rescuers realized that she was paralyzed. However, with unconditional support, she made it through the most unbelievable of circumstances.
Sometimes, dogs that are used to breed puppies often live in a terrible environment and face severe neglect. Maria, a dachshund, was mistreated for her whole life by her owners, leaving her paralyzed from the ribs down.
But the cruelty didn’t end here—despite her paralysis, her owners still used her to breed puppies. Newsner reports that since she was paralyzed, she couldn’t undergo a normal delivery, and when her owners learned that they needed to cough up US$3,000 for a cesarean section, they abandoned her.
Fortunately, Friends of Emma, an animal organization in Texas, took her in under their care. When the animals advocate organization took her to the vet, they made a surprising discovery. The poor neglected dog was not just pregnant with two puppies but instead had seven. She was also discovered to be suffering from blood loss due to a severe flea infestation and was malnourished.
The vets also mentioned that she had been paralyzed for months.
Maria was initially terrified of humans. However, she recovered well and gave birth on Aug. 4, 2014, via C-section. Her seven puppies were born hale and hearty. Friends of Emma wrote on their Facebook page: “A few quick updates on our newest arrivals – and then it’s back to work here…Our Mama Doxie is doing very well following her c-section to deliver her 7 little beauties. She doesn’t have any milk, so I am bottle feeding ’round the clock – but Mama’s doing the rest of the work… the kids get comfort from nursing, even though Mom has no milk – and they are nuzzled, cleaned and kept warm by Mama just as they should be. She is a doting Mom and seems to be enjoying her brood. 7 little ones – 4 boys, 3 girls… all seem healthy and thriving.”
The pure dachshund puppies that are a part of the “Von Dapp Family” were named Friedrich, Gretl, Werner, Liesl, Louisa, Kurt, and Rofle, and they thrived under their mother’s care.
When her bouncy and happy puppies turned 8 weeks old, they were adopted.

However that was not all—after five long months of therapy, Maria stunned everyone as she started to walk again; it was indeed a miracle! She also started to trust and love.
Maria is now a healthy, happy, and energetic dog, though when she is tired, her hind legs sometimes drag a little. However, she started to run and wag her tail. And then in January 2015, Friends of Emma posted an update on their Facebook page stating that the strong-willed mother was adopted too. Indeed, some stories do have a happy ending, and though Maria had to face a lot of hardship initially, we hope she is thriving at her new home.
