The King shared a very close bond with his mother, Gladys Presley. He learned from his mother that he had a twin brother, Jesse, who was stillborn. This was something that would haunt the King for the rest of his life and he is believed to have always remembered his brother.

Growing up as a kid, Elvis didn’t have many friends and was more of a loner. When he was 10 years old, a teacher noticed him singing and persuaded him to sign up for a singing contest. He only managed to get the fifth place and his music teacher told the future legend that he was merely average.

He wasn’t always interested in music and didn’t get his first guitar until he was 11 years old. When he was in the sixth grade, he would often carry his guitar to school and play it while he sang his favorite songs. His classmates would mock him for playing some “hillbilly music.” Little did they know that he would one day be regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century.

His voice and moves on the stage would make one feel as if he was born for it, but did you know that as a child, Elvis was shy of performing publicly but eventually got over it?

A fear that he could never get over all his life was germophobia. According to Daily Mail, Priscilla, his ex-wife, once mentioned on a TV talk show that the King did not like to dine at other people’s homes and even if he did, he would take his own silverware.

The biggest heartbreak of his life came when his mother passed away after suffering a heart attack at the age of 46. The King was inconsolable as he felt that piece of him was gone. According to FetchSport, Elvis stated in an interview: “She’s all I ever lived for. She was always my best girl.”

When he was at the peak of his career, Elvis was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1958. He refused to enlist in Special Services and opted to serve as a regular soldier instead.

It was during his time in the Army that he met the love of his life, Priscilla Beaulieu. At the time, Priscilla was only 14, while Elvis was 24 years old. Eight years later, the couple got married in Las Vegas. A year after the marriage, Priscilla gave birth to a baby girl, named Lisa Marie Presley. However, their romantic life soon came to an end as living in the King’s shadow proved too much for Priscilla.

One of the most interesting facts about Elvis is that he was related to the U.S. president Jimmy Carter. The King was supposedly his cousin. According to CBS News, Carter once said, “Elvis is kin to me on my mother’s side.”

He added, “Our families came from Union County, North Carolina, and Elvis is my cousin.”

Another interesting fact about Elvis was that his favorite sandwich was peanut butter, banana, and bacon. Did you know that?

His immense popularity saw people from all over the world rooting for him. But the King never performed outside of North America. He did perform in three gigs in Canada but never stepped out of the continent.

One notable feature of Elvis is that he never liked to give a halfhearted performance and always liked to make a fashion statement. Dressing up in sparkly jumpsuits was one of his trademarks. The diamond-studded suits would weigh over 20 pounds (approx. 9 kg).
