Patrick Karegeya Death: Rwanda Denies Killing Former Intelligence Chief

January 3, 2014 Updated: July 18, 2015

Patrick Karegeya was not killed by the government of Rwanda, the government said this week.

Karegeya, the former intelligence chief for the African nation, was found dead in a hotel room in Johannesburg this week.

He was stripped of his rank of colonel after falling out with Rwandan President Paul Kagame, a former ally, in 2006.

Rwandan ambassador to Uganda Frank Mugambage told the Observer that the claim that Karegeya was murdered by the Rwandan government is false.

“The government of Rwanda has nothing to do with his death,” he said.

The Rwanda National Congress said in a statement that it was “deeply saddened” by the “assassination of Colonel Patrick Karegeya in Johannesburg.”

He was found in Michelangelo Towers, a hotel, where he went for a meeting, the congress said.
