Miami-Dade Police homicide detectives are investigating a case where a woman died after a butt lifting cosmetic surgery procedure at a southwest Miami-Dade County clinic on May 10.
The police got a call for help at 11:13 a.m. on Friday from the MIA Aesthetics at 9300 NW 72nd St., reported the Maimi Herald.
Danea Plasencia, 28, was undergoing a Brazilian butt lift procedure, according to NBC Maimi. She was transported to Baptist Hospital where she died, said police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta.
The family of the woman said that the complications started after the procedure was done.
“Then they moved her body to the stretcher, and all of a sudden, she became blue,” her grandfather, Marcio C. Ferez, told NBC Maimi.
Plasencia’s aunt shared a picture of her on Facebook and confirmed her death.
“It is with great pain that we say RIP darling Danea (my niece). May God give us strength,” she said. Plasencia was a mother to three children—ages nine, five, and one.
MIA Aesthetics told NBC 6 in a statement that they are saddened by the incident. “”We are deeply saddened to share that an incident occurred at our Miami clinic today resulting in the tragic loss of one of our patients during a surgical procedure,” the clinic said.
“Throughout our years of operations and thousands of procedures performed, this is the first and only fatality we have endured,” the statement read.
“Our team is devastated by this tragedy and feels that each and every one of our patients is part of our family. We strive to provide the most advanced plastic surgery treatment for our patients.”
The clinic said each of their doctors is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
“We are constantly evaluating our practices to ensure our patients receive the safest and best care. Despite these practices, serious surgery comes with the risk of rare, unintended and tragic results. We are fully dedicated to investigating why today’s tragedy occurred. We will be fully transparent with our patients and with the public as more details emerge.”
A Brazillian butt lift surgery is a popular cosmetics procedure that extracts fat from various parts of the body and adds it to the buttocks. Plasencia’s cousin, Jennifer Perez, had undergone the same procedure and was hospitalized two months later.
“When you go to a plastic surgery place, they tell you very superficially what the consequences might be, but that goes very fast and quick under the radar and all these wonderful things are said to you, and you’re willing to pay all this money, but you don’t really realize that you’re putting your life on the line,” Perez told NBC 6.
The media’s investigators discovered that Plasencia’s case is one of 12 women who have died in the past few years during or after a Brazilian butt lift surgery.
I never thought I’d have to make a GoFundMe for a loved one. We lost Danea yesterday after an unsuccessful cosmetic surgery, she left behind 3 beautiful kids. Help us raise money for funeral costs and her children’s futures. https://t.co/ttgS5Wx8JN pic.twitter.com/yRrRFs404D

A GoFundMe page created for Danea said: “Never thought we’d be making a GoFundMe like this but going into Mother’s Day Weekend we received devastating news that our beloved Danea had passed away after an unsuccessful cosmetic surgery, she was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately did not make it due to a pulmonary embolism.”
