A would-be mother was diagnosed with a rare risky pregnancy, in which her twins only had a 50 percent chance of survival. But how these unborn twins supported each other in their mother’s womb is truly amazing—and when they were born, they were literally “holding hands!”

When Sarah and Bill Thistlethwaite, from Orrville, Ohio, were expecting their rare “mono-mono” twins, they were fully aware of the risk involved in their birth.

Monoamniotic-Monochorionic (or mono-mono) twins happens just once in every 10,000 twin pregnancies. In mono-mono twins, the unborn babies share the same amniotic sac, and during development, the umbilical cords of the babies might strangle each other—wherein the babies have a 50 percent chance of survival.

But like it was predestined, the two adorable babies were born safely, surprising their parents and all the doctors at each step of their development. This is their incredible story!

Sarah, a mathematics teacher, was very careful after having come to know about the risk of her pregnancy. She had to monitor the condition of the babies’ health in the womb. And as soon as she completed her sixth month, the doctors admitted her to the hospital.

Dr. Mancuso, who looked after the mother and twins throughout their journey, is the director of the fetal treatment center at Akron Children’s Hospital. “It’s the rarest form of twinning and it carries the most risk which was due to sharing the same amniotic sac, their umbilical cords can become tangled as they’re growing and moving which can cut off blood supply to one or both twins,” he told PEOPLE.

Hence, the twins survival was questionable.

During the next 57 days at the hospital, the babies were regularly monitored so that the babies’ cords would not get entangled at the time of delivery. Finally, at 33 weeks, the doctors performed a cesarean section, and the twins were born just a few days before Mother’s Day in 2014.

Seconds after baby Jillian and Jenna came into the world, the delivery room fell into silence. Then suddenly, Dr. Mancuso cried in delight: “Oh my gosh! They’re holding hands!”

“They were born 45 seconds apart,” Amy Kilgore, a hospital spokesperson who witnessed the amazing birth, told Fox 8. “Once they made sure they were OK, they held them up so mom and dad could see. As soon as they were side by side, they held hands. It gave me chills.”

Recalling the extraordinary moment, Sarah said: “My heart just melted. Even my husband got tears in his eyes—I don’t know that anybody in the room had a dry eye.”

During the entire process, there were many emotional struggles that these parents went through, along with their 1-year-old son Jaxson.

These twins have a special bond that started long before the actual birth; they are the best friends—more like best friends forever! “They’re definitely really close. They’re like two peas in a pod,” said Sarah.

The parents shared that if they are separated for sometime, like if their father takes one of them for shopping and the other stays at home with the mother, each one is worried about the other. Not only this, when one of the twins is upset, the other will pat her on the back to comfort her.

Two years after they were born, Jillian was becoming more a daredevil, while Jenna was more cautious and careful. Differences aside, they share many things in common—both of them like the same foods and toys, and they also love going out and swimming together.

Now, Jillian and Jenna are 5 years old. They are absolutely adorable and pretty! It would be interesting for these parents to watch the relationship of their twins as they grow up and face life. These little souls taught the world one amazing lesson of unconditional love and support indeed!
