Mom Hides $5 Under a Piece of Trash to Test Husband and Kids. Guess Who Picks It Up?

Parents all over the world have to deal with it. They’re trying to walk through the house and stumble over some toys, clothes, or just plain garbage that their kids have left behind without a thought. What can a frustrated parent do to get their children to clean up?

One Texas mother of three has developed an ingenious hack that has parents on the internet talking. Miranda Crimbring, of Austin, Texas, is just an ordinary mom doing her best to raise her kids to respect their parents and the house they live in.

Tired of hearing her words about picking up things off the floor fall on deaf ears, she decided to take drastic measures. A simple idea came to her: why not see how long it would take someone to see the trash on the floor and do something about it?

To sweeten the pot, she folded up and taped a $5 bill to the bottom of the piece of paper. She put it on the bathroom floor near the bathmat, then she started watching. How long would it take before someone found the prize?

Well, while trying to prove a point to my kids, we’ve just surpassed the 48hr mark of the “who will pick up the random…

While Crimbring expected someone to pick it up after a few hours, the results shocked her, and she decided to share it on her Facebook page. Clearly laughing to herself, she wrote: “we’ve just surpassed the 48hr mark of the ‘who will pick up the random piece of trash that they KNOW isn’t supposed to be there’ challenge.”

Not only had her kids been in and out of the bathroom several times, but her husband was also found to be just as guilty of ignoring the trash. She joked that “this little piece of heaven may be in there for the long haul.”

While Crimbring was waiting for someone to “just do the right thing,” she eventually decided to reveal her plans to her husband, even though he hadn’t done much better than their kids. He got a kick out of waiting for it to be picked up as much she did.

“His first response was, ‘Man, I KNEW I should have picked it up!'” she told TODAY. “Later, he said something like, ‘But, you know, Honey, I left it there on purpose, because I knew you were trying to prove a point to the kids.'”

Clearly, Crimbring’s predicament and her interesting experiment resonated with other parents as her post was shared over 300,000 times.

Fellow mom Julia Chadwell posted a picture of her own experiment with a piece of paper near her shoe rack in the comments section. “Ten bucks says the cat does something with it first!” she joked.

On day three, Crimbring posted an update showing the piece of paper only having moved slightly. “Paper is still there though it looks like someone may have kicked it?” More trash had appeared on the floor, though as Crimbring noted, “not made by me.”

Finally, there was a development in the case. Crimbring’s 7-year-old daughter threw her dirty clothes on the floor and while picking them up managed to tip the piece of paper over “money side up.” Her daughter “gasped and then shrieked” when she saw the $5 bill.

Unfortunately, in a rather ironic twist, her daughter left the piece of paper that the reward had been taped to on the counter, proving that Crimbring had a way to go. Nevertheless, they “had a nice long family talk afterward,” and in the process, moms all over the country have  been inspired to challenge their families. So the next time you see a piece of paper on the floor, just do the right thing.
