Man in Wheelchair Can’t Go Into Barber Shop, So Hairstylist Brings Tools to the Sidewalk

When a man in a wheelchair couldn’t get inside a barbershop because it wasn’t wheelchair accessible, one barber decided to bring the service to him.

In September 2018, when Devin Hamilton, of Webster, New York, went to Joe’s Upscale Barber Shop for a haircut, he realized he was stuck outside in his wheelchair because there was no ramp.

“I came over here to get a haircut,” Hamilton told Democrat & Chronicle. “Couldn’t get in, but I’m one of the people that—I figure out how to make it happen.”

Not willing to be deterred, Hamilton, who has cerebral palsy, called the shop. It didn’t take long for three barbers to rush out after realizing Hamilton wanted a haircut.

“As soon as he said, ‘Do you guys take walk-ins?’ I knew that’s who was outside,” barber Victor Burgos told “I immediately ran out there with two other barbers to see if we could get him in somehow.”

When they couldn’t get Hamilton into the shop, Burgos knew what he had to do—cut his hair outside the shop.

“He definitely needed a haircut,” Burgos said. “It looked like he hadn’t had a haircut in about a month. It was pretty shaggy [and] I know how good it feels to get that weight off of you. I could tell that he’s never had a good experience. I could tell without even asking him, and I just wanted to change it for him.”

I wasn’t there, but a few days ago at the shop we had a man in a wheelchair come to the shop on a recommendation….

“It’s about making sure everyone gets a proper grooming,” he added.

When the owner of the shop, Joe Cocozza, learned of Burgos’s action, he was pleased.

“I couldn’t be happier to work and know a person of such kind nature as Victor,” he wrote on his Facebook page. “I’m proud to know that even when I’m not around our staff will go out of their way.”

Burgos hopes that Hamilton will come back again for another haircut, and he promises to cut his hair regardless of the location.

“I’ll cut your hair wherever you need me to cut your hair,” Burgos said. ”Outside, inside, wherever—we’ll figure it out.”

Burgos’s attention and care for Hamilton goes beyond customer service. There’s only one word to describe it: kindness.
