A financial officer in Portland had noticed an elderly man struggling past his office each day with a walker that seemed more trouble than it was worth. After a week of observing the man’s difficulty getting about, the kind fellow went ahead and ordered a new walker for him.
Meet Adam Gulledge, a financial advisor in Portland who made the news in October 2017 after he noticed an elderly man, named Clint, who would shuffle past his office window each day.
Gulledge noticed the man’s stroller made walking difficult for him. But it wasn’t actually the sight of Clint that caught Gulledge’s attention, it was more the sound.
“In fact you would hear him walking first because you would hear his old walker actually scraping across the bricks here and the metal…you’d hear it scraping step by step. And you’d hear him. Then you’d see him walk past the windows,” said Gulledge, as reported by KGW. “Almost like nails on a chalkboard in a sense. It is not the most pleasant sound. It is metal scraping across concrete pavement.”
At first, when Gulledge noticed Clint, he didn’t take any action for a week. Then came the day when he decided he could do something to help the old man out.
“I was coming back from lunch one time and I realized if I can afford to go out to lunch pretty much regularly, I can pretty much easily help out somebody else on his daily routine,” Gulledge said.
“And watching him slowly walk by every day, if we could improve him, improve his situation where he could walk much faster. I mean he was literally moving the walker, taking a step. Moving the walker.”
Gulledge decided to be more than just an observer, and went out of his way to order Clint, a man he had never met in his life, a brand-new stroller.
When the stroller arrived, Gulledge assembled it himself. He went to the spot outside his office window and waited for the elderly man to walk past the office as he usually does.
When he did come around, Gulledge slowly approached the gentleman and explained that he had bought a spanking new walker for him, which would make his life so much easier.
Cellphone footage of Gulledge’s kind gesture was posted on social media, and gained a lot of attention.
One of Gulledge’s colleagues filmed the scene with his cellphone, and that’s why we can all learn about this kind act today.
“I saw this through my office window,” Gulledge’s colleague, Jared Rasmussen, wrote on Facebook. “This made me feel better about society. Thank you Adam.”
Gulledge believes that we all can contribute in our own ways to make the world a better place. Even a casual smile can inject a bit of positivity into someone’s day.
Speaking on the matter, Gulledge said: “I’d never interacted with him before so I didn’t know what it would be like. But he was very appreciative—smiled. I said ‘by the way, my name’s Adam’ and his name was Clint. And when I saw him just yesterday, walking by again, he was all smiles with me.”

So my friend at work Adam Gulledge helped this gentleman out today. This man has been shuffling by our office the last few weeks every day in a broken walker. Adam had ordered him a new walker and put it together for him. When he came by he delivered it to him. I saw this through my office window. This made me feel better about society. Thank you Adam. #livemoorechallenge
