Fans of the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise gave the offending photo a critical reception on social media, expressing disappointment over Depp’s role in the film despite charges of domestic violence brought against him by ex-wife Amber Heard. Photos of a visibly bruised Heard spread across social media around the time she accused Depp of striking her in the face with his iPhone on the night of May 21, 2016. More shockingly, Heard claimed Depp abused her repeatedly. The actor has emphatically denied the allegations.

Heard dropped the domestic violence lawsuit against Depp in August 2016. According to a report by Yahoo News, “sources close to Amber “allegedly say she “doesn’t want to bury” Depp, believing that if she were to file a police report, it could “trigger an arrest and prosecution.”
