Happy 75th Birthday Sam Elliott! Legendary ‘Virgil Earp’ Actor Only Gets Better With Age

August 9, 2019 Updated: August 11, 2019

The actor with the voice of a true cowboy and a legendary mustache straight out of the wild west turns 75 today.

Despite his age, Sam Elliott has built a career in Hollywood that never seems to get old, and even seems to get only better with age.

He got his start as the perfect cowboy card player in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” in 1969, and that western persona has kept him going strong ever since. But he’s even managed to successfully expand from that.

Best known for roles in “Gunsmoke” in 1972 and, in more recent years, as law giver Virgil in “Tombstone” in 1993, Elliott has proven that age has only been a virtue.

Still, Elliott has managed to expand his range since then, reinventing himself on Netflix’s hit TV show “The Ranch,” a comedic sitcom. He plays Beau Roosevelt Bennett, a Vietnam War vet who found himself working on the ranch ever since coming home from the battlefield.

In 2018, working with Bradley Cooper in his directorial debut, Elliott filled a widely acclaimed, soulfully rendered role as a tour manager in “A Star is Born.”

Ain't he a handsome devil?

Besides dropping into a successful niche in Hollywood spanning five decades and counting, Elliot’s love life has endured the test of time. He’s been happily married to actress Katherine Ross for over 35 years. He recalls first seeing her on the set of Butch Cassidy, although they didn’t speak until later.

“All I could do was just watch Katharine come and go. We didn’t interact at all. I saw her a lot because I knew who she was, and I was just another guy on the lot at that point and time,” Sam told NewsOK.

“I didn’t dare try to talk to her then. She was the leading lady. I was a shadow on the wall, a glorified extra in a bar scene,” Sam told AARP.

It wasn’t for until nearly 10 years later when they performed together in horror flick “The Legacy” that they hit it off as a couple. They finally tied the knot in 1984 and have endured ever since, bringing daughter Cleo Ross Elliott into the world together.

“We have a common sensibility, but we also work at being together,” Sam said, sharing his secret to a successful marriage. “That’s how relationships last.” A marriage takes work, he’ll admit, especially in their business where it’s not easy to stay together for very long due to schedules.

It’s also highly likely that some of Elliot’s cowboy charm—that enduring, masculine, true gentleman’s voice, and that old-world mustache—has made him a keeper.

Even now with silver hair and matching whiskers, that allure certainly shines through on screen, too. His 2015 role in “I’ll See You in My Dreams” broke all the rules by portraying a latter-years relationship between the actor and a woman of the same age. It brought to life a truism about age—that it is often misread by younger folk.

A well-earned hats-off is in order to mark the occasion of this loved and enduring actor on his 75th day on this earth. May you have health, more great movies, continued love, and many more years to come, Sam Elliot!
