A grandma in Texas has been giving back to society by cooking and serving hundreds of meals every summer for hungry kids after learning that they often get nothing to eat when there’s no school.
Willa Johnson is the owner of a catering business named “The Soul Kitchen.” Despite living in Forth Worth, Texas, she had been making her way to Athens to feed hungry children every week during summers.
When Johnson was working for the state and was in a program that feeds hungry schoolchildren, she learned that the poor children in Athens sometimes go hungry during the summer break when the schools are closed.
The 51-year-old decided to quit her job and start her catering company to feed the hungry children. For this noble cause, she and her helpers now travel over 100 miles, five days a week, to the small city of Athens.
“God put people on this earth for certain reasons, and I think this is my calling,” Johnson told WFAA. “God put it on my heart,” she added.
With full support and help from volunteers, Johnson has set up a program named Feeding Kids Right, feeding children five days a week, serving nearly 300 meals a day.
“This summer, we fed over 300 kids,” she told Athens Review.
“Word is really getting out, and we have reached out to the Hispanic community, which is a good thing. We want to feed them hot meals.”
And Johnson has a big heart. She has been using most of her savings to help the children, and at times, relies on donations.
“If a kid is hungry and they wanna eat, I will feed them,” she said.
“When you have it in your heart and it’s your passion, it’s not going to bother you at all,” Johnson added. “God put people on this earth for certain reasons, like he put me here to cook for these kids.”
Those who benefited from Johnson’s kindness were grateful to her.
“She’s one of his angels that He sent to us,” said one grandparent.
