Couple Laugh at Woman Wearing Bathing Suit, but She Has the Perfect Response for Them

Body-shaming can affect a person’s confidence. But for one woman, her confidence was not affected when a couple laughed at her for wearing a bathing suit; instead, she responded to them online, and to great applause.

In September 2017, when Jacqueline Adan went to Mexico for a vacation, she wore a bathing suit for the first time, and “it had been even longer since I wore a bathing suit without a cover up,” she wrote on her Instagram account.

She went on to explain.

“I was nervous to take my cover up off and to walk into the pool or walk on the beach. I still felt like that same 500 pound girl … then it happened.”

A couple sitting by the pool were laughing and pointing at Adan for her loose skin. In fact, she had lost 350 pounds (approx. 159 kg).

Before she took off her cover-up, she had been trying to convince herself that everything would be fine.

“For a brief moment, I thought to myself, ‘I can’t do this. I can’t take this cover-up off,’” the then-30-year-old told PEOPLE. “It took a lot for me to actually tell myself, ‘It’s OK, you are beautiful just the way you are.’”

When that moment finally happened, she couldn’t understand why someone would do that to her.

“I did not know if I was going to cry or put my cover-up back on and not go swimming,” she said. “For a moment I froze, I could not believe how someone could judge me and make fun of me. They had no idea who I was, what I had been through or what I was currently going through.”

If it was the old Adan, she might react differently. “I would have allowed their comments to affect my vacation and I probably would not have gone to the beach or pool again,” she said.

But now, she “took a deep breath, smiled and walked into the pool,” she wrote on her Instagram post.

“That’s when it hit me … they have no idea about my weight loss, so why am I going to let their opinions affect me? How I feel about myself is what matters,” she explained. “And so that’s exactly why I smiled at them and jumped into the pool!”

Though she never saw the couple again during her vacation, she wanted to “give them a hug,” she told TODAY. “That’s obviously what they needed: more love and more positivity instead of judging people,” she explained.

A year later, in September 2018, Adan was body-shamed again during a beach vacation. The difference was she “just did not care!”

The story points to how we think and that our thoughts are very important. Thinking positively and not letting ourselves be bothered by what others say is a good way to be.
