Starting out as a model and an actress on Broadway, Ball rose to fame on the 1950s sitcom I Love Lucy, which incidentally co-starred her husband Desi Arnaz. Ball rehearsed every line and every facial expression to perfection, and was celebrated for her pitch-perfect  comic timing.

Ball amassed roles in over 70 movies in her lifetime and was revered for her gumption. She changed the face of television for women throughout the course of her decades-long career, most famously with her second pregnancy.

The pregnancy was written into the script of I Love Lucy, and despite a battle with the show’s producers over the use of the word “pregnant” on screen—it was strictly forbidden in favor of “expecting”—the episode featuring the birth of little Ricky was aired on the same day that Ball welcomed her real-life baby, Desi Jr., by cesarean.

CBS had never shown a pregnant woman on television before.

Not content with breaking boundaries in front of the camera, Ball went on to purchase Desilu Productions, becoming the first woman to ever run a major television production studio in the process.

Today, you’d be forgiven for mistaking Ball’s great-granddaughter, Desiree Anzalone, for the young actress in her heyday. The resemblance is undeniable!

Now aged 29, Ball’s great-granddaughter Desiree is a photographer with a degree in creative writing from the University of North Texas. Not only does she bear a striking resemblance to her trailblazing, beautiful great grandmother, but she has also inherited her gumption.

At the painfully young age of 25, Desiree was diagnosed with breast cancer and mercifully beat the disease, but not before enduring a stretch of complicated treatment, however. “Chemo #6 this past Friday,” the young woman posted on her Instagram account, sharing her journey with friends and fans. “Feeling very loopy after a shot of Benadryl to the chest.”

Support flooded in. “You should know what a complete rockstar you are, girl,” wrote one cheerleader. “You’re such an inspiration to me,” wrote another. “It takes a lot of courage to step up to this challenge and you are conquering it magnificently.”

Lucille’s granddaughter Julia was sadly estranged from her father. The pair were reunited in the 1990s, but years of separation meant that Julia was never able to meet her iconic grandmother before her passing in 1989. “I was very pregnant with my daughter Desido,” Julia posted on Facebook, “and I remember just falling to my knees knowing I’d never get the chance to ever met my G-ma–in this lifetime.”

“I would have loved the chance to love Lucy too.”

The spirit of Lucy lives on in the grace, guts, and gumption of her beautiful doppelgänger, Desiree. We all love Lucy, and Lucy would be proud!

Did you know this episode of I Love Lucy is the ONLY time George Reeves appeared as Superman away from his own ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN series? Tune in on Sun at 8/7c on CBS!
