A young boy asked a waiter he’d just met if he’d visit him at the hospital where he was going in for brain surgery. Much to the surprise of the boy and his family, the waiter showed up.
It has been a long time since Drew Lewis worked the Friday shift at Olive Garden in Akron, Ohio, as a server. So when the 23-year-old worked on Oct. 19, 2018, he soon realized that the shift was one of the “best nights” he’d had.
Lewis shared the reasons why in a Facebook post.
During his shift, he attended to a family with four children who were all quite hyper. Lewis decided to entertain the four children and struck up a conversation with one boy who was wearing a shirt that read #TommyStrong.
It turned out that the boy’s name was Tommy and he was having brain surgery the coming Monday to treat his epilepsy.
As they chatted, Lewis, who is a police cadet at the University of Akron Summit County Sheriff’s Department Police Academy, learned that Tommy also wanted to be a police officer when he grew up.
Before leaving, the 8-year-old asked Lewis if he could come to the hospital to support him if he was not too busy.
Lewis promised Tommy he would be there, and he was, bringing with him a T-shirt he’d bought from the school and a card signed by everyone in his class, Fox 8 reported.
“This kid showed me how to be strong and handle the diversity life throws at you,” Lewis wrote.
Lewis’s act of kindness amazed Tommy’s parents.
Tommy’s mom, Krista Gallagher, wrote on her Facebook page that Lewis “showed up on Monday and sat with family he didn’t even know, for 6 1/2 hours out of the 8 1/2 hours of surgery. He talked with us, calmed us, took our mind off things and got to know us and our friends.”
“There are still amazing people in this world and Drew is one of the few!” she added.
When Tommy woke up, he asked for Lewis after learning that his new friend came by and had left.
Once Lewis heard about this, he canceled his plans for the day and returned to the hospital.
“He came back and played video games with Tommy,” Gallagher told WKYC3.
“We’re buddies for life now,” Lewis said.
