600-Pound Single Mom Documents Epic Weight Loss: ‘I Have to Do This for My Daughter!’

April 19, 2019 Updated: April 24, 2019

“I can’t see anyone else raising her,” said Leneathra Reed, of Mississippi, the 600-pound (approx. 272-kilogram) single mother who is blowing minds by sharing her epic weight loss journey on the internet. And she’s doing it for her daughter.

Reed began working with a personal trainer in November of 2018 after a sobering weigh-in. The mom of one knew that it had been at least two years since she’d weighed in at fewer than 600 pounds, but the number on the scales was still a shock: 626 pounds (approx. 284 kg).

Reed knew she couldn’t ignore the health risks any longer.

The 39-year-old’s personal trainer, Frank Harbin, quickly clocked Reed’s tenacity and shared a video of the determined mother’s fitness routine in order to garner support. Not to mention, this woman is an inspiration.

Harbin’s footage documents Reed’s grueling workout, including jumping jacks, tire climbing (yes, that’s a real thing!), and sit-ups. Reed’s fitness antics have amassed over 52 million views, and over 100,0000 people have left enthusiastic messages of support for the Mississippi mom on a mission.

What’s it all in aid of? Reed opened up to WCVB News about her daughter, 23-month-old Kenlyn. “I have to do this for my daughter,” she said, with love. “Just her smile and watching her light up looking at me, it’s enough to keep me going!”

“I would stop in the hallway and pretend like I was talking to other co-workers,” Reed continued, “just embarrassed that I couldn’t breathe.” By the time November’s weigh-in came around, Reed already knew that her health was suffering. The epic effort to start shedding the pounds came not a moment too soon.

Reed has worked out regularly with Harbin ever since. “Even those few pounds that I’ve lost, I can tell the difference in my back,” Reed revealed. She’s already lost an impressive 30 pounds (approx. 14 kg). “I can actually breathe better!” she exclaimed.

Harbin’s video is providing inspiration to social media users far and wide. Some have commented in solidarity, sharing their own weight loss achievements. Some simply wish to air their support. “She won’t quit,” Harbin praised. “She’ll push to the end.”

“Hard work pays off. Can’t wait to see the new YOU!!” wrote one Facebook user. “She just motivated me to get off my butt and get this weight off. Keep up the good work sista,” wrote another.

Public support adds fuel to the fire for Reed, who is hugely affirmed and exponentially boosted by the amazing comments that she and Harbin receive. “No matter when we go live, y’all don’t understand, the whole world is motivating this woman,” Harbin shared, gratefully. Reed herself hopes that her ongoing weight loss journey will continue to inspire others to get healthy.

Happy Wednesday! If someone would have asked me before my journey did I truly love myself or did I feel accomplished…

Encouragement goes a long, long way, but a dedicated weight loss lifestyle is not easy on the bank balance. Reed is playing the long game, and as such, her supportive trainer has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for ongoing personal training and plastic surgery after Reed loses the bulk of her excess weight.

Reed posted an update on her Facebook page on April 10, 2019. “If someone would have asked me before my journey did I truly love myself or did I feel accomplished and think that I was beautiful and enough?” Reed began, “I would’ve most likely answered NO!”

“But I finally know who I am!” the proud mom and newly dedicated fitness fanatic declared. “I am Leneathra Lynn Reed-McClelland … I’m beautiful, intelligent, God-fearing, genuine, and I am more than enough! It’s my season!”

It’s your season indeed, Leneathra! Keep on keeping on, for Kenlyn, and for yourself.
