Struggling with infertility for four long years, a couple from Maryland chose to go down the path of adoption to start a family. However, the tedious part was waiting for the adoption process to finalize. So, when they were awaiting inspection from the adoption agency, little did they know that  their bundle of joy was being delivered to their home step.

Michael Faherty, a firefighter with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department in Maryland, met his wife, Karen, in Reserve Officer Training Corps while studying at the University of Scranton.

The couple had both served in the Army and settled down in Baltimore after tying the knot.

To make the family complete, Michael and Karen had dreamed to become parents for a long time, but fortunately, they struggled to conceive. Hence, the Fahertys turned to adoption a year prior.

Speaking to Capital Gazette, Michael said: “Knowing adoption would be a part of our story, we knew it would be a twisty path to actually start that family.”

The wait to hear whether the birth parents had selected them was “agonizing[ly] long,” while the adoption journey was filled with ups and downs.

Then, the couple was told in a letter from the agency “Adoption Makes Family” that their home required re-inspection on Feb. 16 due to a change in the law.

Karen, a nurse with the University of Maryland Medical Center, suspected there was something going on because the adoption agency was famous for coming up with ways to surprise parents with their new child.

“I think we’re going to get a baby,” she told Michael.

However, to avoid disappointment, Michael dismissed it. Little did he know that Karen’s intuition was going to come true.

Other than just meeting Dean Kirschner, the founder of the agency “Adoption Makes Family,” Michael and Karen were greeted by the blaring sirens of a fire truck.

The couple was shocked when they saw some 30 firefighters, who were Michael’s classmates at the Anne Arundel County Fire Training Academy, show up at their doorstep.

“And then I hear them start to sing and then I start to home in on some of the faces and I look and think, ‘Wait, I know these people,’” Michael told ABC7.

Just as Michael and Karen were wondering what was going on, someone shouted: “We got something for you. A delivery!”

A moment later, the couple noticed Kirschner walking towards their home carrying a baby in his arms.

Michael’s colleagues applauded and cheered as Kirschner presented the couple with a little bundle of joy—a blessing of a lifetime!

“Here’s your baby boy,” Kirschner announced.

Karen lost it when she learned the baby was her adopted son.

“Thank you so much,” Karen said tearfully.

But the surprise didn’t just end there. Next, Michael and Karen were ushered to the back of the ambulance. Inside the ambulance were diapers and other gifts.

The Fahertys were thankful to their “brother and sister firefighters,” who chipped in to buy the toys, clothes, and diapers for their adoptive son, and to fill their refrigerator with food.

Kirschner, who contacted the fire department to give the soon-to-be parents a special “Gotcha” on the day their adoption was finalized, said: “I’m always looking for an exciting way for a baby to go home to his or her forever family.”

This memorable baby delivery, captured on video, was then uploaded on Facebook by firefighter Nick Dooley. He wrote: “Congratulations Michael Faherty on your baby boy! Major shoutout to Class 57, Together as one!”

Dooley later told Good Morning America: “Mike was always doing everything in his power to help anyone out, he was a great leader. Being able to give something back to him was an incredible experience.”

The video has since racked up more than 319,000 views and some 2,555 shares.

“Congratulations! This is pretty awesome. Enjoy and soak up every moment with your baby. They grow up way too quickly!” one user wrote.

Another commented: “This is the sweetest thing ever! What an amazing brotherhood you guys have!!”

“Now that [sic] what a brotherhood of first responders is all about,” another opined.

Some users wondered why Kirschner didn’t hand over the baby to Karen immediately.

In response to that, Kirschner said: “I did not hand that baby to that mother while she was on the steps, stunned, shocked, filled with adrenaline. I waited until she was inside. Then, when the two of them were sitting together, I placed the baby in their arms.”

With the arrival of their little bundle of joy, named Michael Terrance Faherty III, the Faherty family is now complete.

“I’ve never seen a greater gift,” Karen said.

“We hope and pray that all families waiting for their son or daughter have a happy ending,” she added.

Hats off to the awesome firefighters for helping deliver this beautiful package to Michael and Karen.

There’s no denying a baby is a blessing from the heavens above. May little Michael bring forth loads of smiles and joy to the Fahertys, following this unforgettable first meeting.
