3 Black Women Scripted Pageant History — the Internet Is Buzzing With Celebrations

May 4, 2019 Updated: May 9, 2019

These three beauty queens have just scripted history, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and Miss America reigning simultaneously—all black. This is the first time this has happened, and the internet is abuzz with excitement.

Miss North Carolina, Cheslie Kryst was crowned Miss USA on May 2, joining the current Miss America, Nia Franklin, and Miss Teen USA, Kaliegh Garris, who was crowned beauty queen earlier this week.

Kryst, 28, is a lawyer from North Carolina who practices civil litigation, and describes herself as a “weird kid” with a “unibrow.” In the final round of the competition, she summed up her generation with one word: “innovative,” according to Associated Press.

“I’m standing here in Nevada, in the state that has the first female majority legislature in the entire country,” Kryst said at the Rio event. “Mine is the first generation to have that forward-looking mindset that has inclusivity, diversity, strength and empowered women. I’m looking forward to continued progress in my generation.”

But Kryst is no stranger to the pageant world. She won her first crown in Grade 9 as Miss Freshman at Rock Hill’s Northwestern High School. She then subsequently went on to win Miss North Carolina and Miss North Carolina USA.

“I can’t say pageants make you beautiful. I think they make your [sic] more confident in the person that you are,” she said. “I’m still that same weird kid. I still like reading books. And at the end of the day, I like to sit by myself in my house and just watch movies. But I think pageants taught me all that, and my mom was really the one who introduced me to that and drew me to pageantry.”

Kryst has both a law degree and an MBA from Wake Forest University.

Later this year, she is headed for the Miss Universe competition.

Meanwhile, Miss Teen USA, Kaliegh Garris, 18, from Connecticut, is a high school student. The gorgeous girl accepted her crown with natural curls on April 28. She had people trying to get her to straighten her hair for the competition, but she decided to wear her hair natural. It has been 20 years since the winner of Miss Teen USA has worn her hair natural, the last winner with a natural hairstyle was Ashley Coleman in 1999, so the internet is excited at the new look of Garris.

Garris has amazingly natural curly hair.

“The night before, I finger curled every single piece of my hair in the shower, which led to a very long shower, but it was for the greater good,” Garris told  Refinery29. “I know what I look like with straight hair, with extensions, and with my curly hair, and I feel more confident and comfortable with my natural hair.”

Garris is hoping to inspire other black girls to embrace their own beauty and have confidence in who they are. The high school senior is also planning to attend Southern Connecticut State University’s nursing program, as she aspires to become a trauma nurse in the future.

Nia Franklin, 24, was crowned Miss America 2019 in September 2018. She became the first contestant to be judged not having to wear a swimsuit in the almost 100 years of the pageant history.

“I’m a part of history,” Franklin told Good Morning America.

As an opera singer with a Master’s degree in music composition from UNC School of the Arts, Franklin intends to use her voice for more than just singing, as she plans to be active in her support of the arts.

“I grew up at a predominately Caucasian school and there was only five percent minority, and I felt out of place so much because of the color of my skin,” Franklin said. “But growing up, I found my love of arts, and through music that helped me to feel positive about myself and about who I was,” she said, as per ClassicfM.
