Immersed in the realities of a fast-paced world, most of us have a lot less or little time to spend with our family. Therefore, in order to ensure a feeling of love and  security among all family members, maintaining healthy relationships is crucial.

Annie Berry, who turned 105 years old on Jan. 18, 2019, is someone who knows what family values and relationships are all about. Unlike other people of her age who feel forsaken, she is someone whom everyone looks up to—she’s the matriarch.

Recently, Berry was visited by all five generations of her family at the Genesis Larkin Chase Center in Bowie, Maryland, the reason being that she was going to welcome a new addition to the family—her great-great-granddaughter, Olivia.

According to WUSA9, Berry winked and laughed as she said, “I think she’s cute like Grandmama.” As the 105-year-old held the 1-week-old in her arms, all that little Olivia could do was to let out a cry.

Holding this little bundle of joy, Berry saw the family gathering as an opportunity to reflect on the history she’d witnessed during her lifetime.

Berry was born in Meridian, Mississippi, in 1914, a time during which racism and segregation were at their peak. She recalled picking cotton and shucking corn during her early days.

The heavy discrimination against African-Americans in the southern United States saw her move to North Carolina. She then worked as a caretaker for a white family before landing a job as a school administrator. Post-retirement, she moved to Washington, D.C., and settled down with her family.

When asked about the secret to her longevity and health, Berry attributes it to her “obedience to the Lord.” She’s living life to the fullest, surrounded by all those who love her. This is something that we all hope for.

Granddaughter Annie Sewell noted that the progress that had been made towards equality during Berry’s lifetime was pretty significant.

As Berry envisions a wonderful future for her great-great-granddaughter, she said: “I’d like for her to be kind and loving and do what mother says to do.”

The family has also won the admiration of netizens, as one user wrote on Facebook: “How very WONDERFUL! May God bless this family for remembering and honoring great, great grandma in this precious way. Lovely!”

“I miss my great grandma she taught me double Dutch. How to shuffle and play cards and she read me the bible every single day. We ate all the pudding and watermelon we wanted to. She lived long enough to see 3 great great grandson. We love you LouAnna Dinkins,” chimed in another.

At the end of the day, we can agree that Berry deserves all the credit for instilling that spirit of unity through all the generations of her family. When little Olivia grows up, she’ll realize how lucky she was to have Berry as her great-great-grandmother.
