Issy Simpson’s got spunk. At just 10 years old, she’s the child magician who will give any cynical adult a run for their money. And on this season of American’s Got Talent: Champions, she did exactly that!
As first runner-up of the eleventh season of Britain’s Got Talent, she had a head start. Issy wooed the judges during her first ever TV appearance, and is now a firm fan favorite for audiences around the world. American’s Got Talent: Champions is no small town gig; it’s watched by millions the world over. Did Issy impress a second time?
The answer is a resounding yes!
The 10-year-old is a consummate professional. She’s the protegee of her grandfather, who inducted her into the world of magic as a tot and has taught her almost everything she knows. “Your grandfather must be a wizard,” joked judge Simon, during Issy’s first appearance on our screens, two years ago. “Yes!” Issy retorted.
Issy marched out on stage, a pillar of confidence, for her audition on Champions in front of a few familiar faces: judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howie Mandel, plus a huge, huge audience of expectant talent enthusiasts.
Thanks so much everyone for all the PMs and support. AGT Champions was such fun! Love, Issy x
Issy proceeded to bring all four judges and the entire theater audience to their feet with her latest magic act. She presented the judges with her three favorite books, predicted that Simon would choose the word “excellent” from a random page, nominated by Howie, and then she guessed a playing card chosen by Howie in a most remarkable way. The tenacious magician removed her jacket to reveal a T-shirt with Howie’s face emblazoned on the front, holding a card: the 3 of diamonds.
And yes you guessed it—that was the card he chose.
With tricksters like David Blaine, Derren Brown, and Dynamo having blown our minds with outside-the-box magic tricks in recent years, we are no strangers to sleight of hand. But Issy is 10 years old, and the sheer delight of her age mixed with her magical ability brings an element of novelty to the stage.
But was it enough?
So excited to share a new card trick that I filmed for #gottalentglobal recently. Love Issy x https://youtu.be/6IoYKUqYA8U
The judges’ decision may have devastated Issy Simpson fans countrywide, but the fab four, who are not in an enviable position, made the tough decision to eliminate Issy before the finals in favor of singer Brian Justin Crum.
Champions show recapper John Benutty was full of praise for young Issy after her latest performance, commenting that “as a kid magician her charisma is off the charts.”
No longer backed by the weight of the judges’ vote, it is still possible that Issy will win the “Superfan vote,” a loophole (of sorts) whereby a select panel of “superfans” from the Los Angeles area will be able to cast their votes in order to sway the final outcome of the whole series.
Magicians have not fared so well on televised talent shows in recent years. Issy is the last in a line of magicians who have gotten the chop before the final curtain. Here’s hoping that the talented young trickster keeps her head held high, and isn’t deterred by this setback.
Simon Cowell acknowledged that Issy’s “competitive spirit” is one of her greatest traits. We expect that the journey isn’t over for young Issy just yet!
