Twelve Arrested in $95 Million Medicare Fraud

Twelve people, including three medical doctors, were arrested in Queens and Brooklyn on Wednesday for allegedly taking part in a nearly $100 million Medicare fraud scheme.

Members of the ring allegedly worked with one another to pose as patients to defraud the Medicare system of more than $95 million, according to a statement issued by the Department of Justice.

“These defendants sought to profit by stealing millions of taxpayer dollars from the Medicare program and laundering the proceeds of this illegal activity," stated Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer, citing court documents.

The doctors allegedly handed out the fake entitlements in several clinics in Brooklyn, and in Flushing, Queens after involved members of the ring submitted fake health care claims to Medicare, officials said.

In many of the cases, many of the submitted procedures were never actually conducted, and in others, patients were given cash to undergo unnecessary treatments, the statement reads.

“Money laundering is a critical part of large scale health care fraud schemes and often the most difficult piece to unravel,” said Loretta E. Lynch, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
