JRM Racing, fresh off of winning the 2011 FIA GT1 World Championship drivers’ title—in its debut year, no less—has announced that it will enter the World Endurance Championship’s highest class, LMP1, with a Honda Performance Development ARX-o3a.
JRM will be facing off against the big factory teams from Audi, Peugeot, and Toyota, as well as privateers like OAK and Rebellion, on some of the world’s most famous tracks: Sebring, Spa, and of course Le Mans for the 24 Hours.
JRM Group Executive Director James Rumsey is undaunted by the prospect of racing the world’s best on the biggest stage. In fact, he says, since its inception the team has been looking toward Le Mans.
“After achieving success at the highest level of GT racing, we are now looking for a fresh challenge and we see competition in Endurance events the next step for the team,” Rumsey said on the JRM website.
“We have chosen the Honda as it’s a well-developed package and currently the most competitive of the petrol-engined LMP1 cars.”
The team is forging ahead with plans for testing and hiring drivers despite not yet having been approved by the series organizers.
“Having Le Mans included in the calendar is a significant factor for us. It has always represented the pinnacle of motorsport achievement and therefore, it’s been a goal of ours to compete there since the company started racing two years ago. We therefore hope that our entry will be accepted this year.”
JRM is also seeking sponsors to continue its wining GT1 team. Since GT1 will use GT3 specifications for 2012, the team would have to use the Nissan GT3 GT-R, which it has developed in partnership with Nissan Motorsports International.Alternatively, the company would be willing to partner with a customer team, selling a GT3 GT-R and providing technical and management support.
