TORONTO—Patricia Reason, a painter and nurse, saw Shen Yun Performing Arts’ fourth performance at Sony Centre on Saturday night and was impressed by the colourful animated backdrops that complement the performers on stage.

Using state-of-the-art graphics technology, the digital projections are a hallmark of the classical Chinese dance production, providing vivid imagery to enhance each dance and song and transporting audiences to the diverse regions and dynasties of China and even to heavenly realms.

“I thought they were marvellous,” said Ms. Reason. “It’s lovely, and artistically it’s just beautiful to look at all the colours and the layers of colours and the way they move.”

New York-based Shen Yun, the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, tours the world every year with an all-new program in its mission to revive the authentic traditional culture of China.

Ms. Reason also had high praise for the costumes and the dancing.

“The costumes are stunning and the dancing is excellent. The women look like tiny perfect epitomes of femaleness, really lovely. And the male dancers very strong,” she said.

“I think I would take home the images of the colours in my head … and the movement of colour.”

Ms. Reason attended Shen Yun accompanied by Ken Found, who works in commercial property investment and management.

“The costumes are amazing,” Mr. Found agreed, adding his praise for the “athletic prowess of the dancers” and the animated backdrops as well.

“The way they handle that screen in the background and integrate it with the dances is very, very interesting,” he said. “Overall, I’m impressed, really enjoying it.”

Both spoke about the educational aspect of Shen Yun’s performance as it relates to Chinese culture.

“I have a little better understanding and appreciation of Chinese dance and culture, and every time you see something like this, particularly with the explanations at the beginning of each dance, you learn something,” said Mr. Found.

Each performance piece is preceded by a short introduction and explanation by Shen Yun’s two emcees.

“I feel like I’m learning a bit about traditional Chinese dance,” said Ms. Reason.
