In Ngaba County, Sichuan Province, China, a Tibetan nun killed herself by self-immolation on Monday in protest against China’s rule of Tibet. This marks the ninth such incident of self-immolation this year, and the first woman to have taken this extreme action.
Tenzin Wangmo, a 20-year-old nun, set fire to herself at 1 p.m. local time outside Dechen Chokorling Nunnery (also known as Mame Nunnery), outside of Ngaba Town, as reported by Free Tibet, a U.K.-based organization.
Her body was subsequently taken to the nunnery. The nuns refused to hand over the body despite pressure from the authorities.
Aba Jigme, a local of Ngaba told Radio Free Asia that Wangmo chose to self-immolate outside Ngaba Town due to a heavy security presence in the town. Hers is the fifth self-immolation in the Ngaba region this October.According to The Tibet Express, on Sunday Chinese police arrested seven Tibetans and shot two for staging an anti-China protest in front of the main Chinese security office in Khekor Township, Serthar County, Sichuan Province.
