Captain Planet, the blue-skinned superhero who uses the elements of the Earth to save the day, will hit the big screens after the producers of Transformers announce their big plans.

Cartoon Network will collaborate with Angry Filmworks on the series Captain Planet and the Planeteers. The Planateers are five humans residing in different parts of the world who are chosen to help protect the Earth from the world’s worst eco-villains. Each Planeteer is given a ring that is empowered with one of the four elements of Earth, Fire, Water, Wind, plus an added Heart. When faced with danger they can’t over come on their own, the Planeteers combine their rings to summon Captain Planet.

President of Turner Broadcasting System Inc.’s Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media division, Stuart Snyder said that the environmental aspects of the movie should not only entertain but teach the kids about natural disasters.

“The messages of Captain Planet are even more relevant today,” said Snyder. “With the earthquakes, tornadoes, melting icebergs and all the other problems threatening the world right now, Earth really needs her greatest defender,” agreed action-adventure producer Don Murphy.

Murphy along with partner Susan Montford own Angry Filmworks which has just released their third part of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The company is scheduled to also release Real Steel, a futuristic sci-fi with Hugh Jackman, which is a collaboration with Steven Spielberg.

The cartoon series which aired on the cable networks of TBS and TNT in the early 90s, earned Captain Planet several Environmental Media Awards and Daytime Emmy nominations. At the time it was the first ever animated environmental series.

According to a press release, Murphy stated “We are extremely excited about bringing the good Captain back to life.”
