COLUMBUS, Ohio—On the evening of March 8, Stanley, who works in marketing, and his wife, Tatiana, who is a tech designer with a major retailer, were in the audience at the Ohio Theatre to see a groundbreaking show, performed by the Shen Yun Performing Arts Company.
Shen Yun is reviving the ancient culture and traditions of China’s 5,000-year-old civilization through stories, myths, and legends told through Chinese classical dance, a live orchestra with Western and Chinese instruments, state of the art digital backdrops, and masterful solo singers.
Stanley said, “The show is magnificent, it was absolutely beautiful.” Tatiana agreed, saying, "It's phenomenal! It had a lot of energy, and it was just beautiful.”
The designer also said she appreciated how the background and costumes worked together. She particularly noted that "the color brings a lot of energy to the show, and it’s just very moving, really nice, it just goes very well together."
Stanley commented on the costumes, too: "I love the costumes. I think a lot of work went into it, and a lot of careful detail is accentuated and emphasized.
“It’s a phenomenal culture. It’s ancient; it comes across full of inspiration and with a truly divine approach to life. It has a lot of positive energy and leaves you with the will to live and to create, he said.
Over all, he gave the show a "5 out of 5 or even higher than that."
Tatiana went on to say, “It is great the way it’s all integrated together, and it was presented in a way that it is easy to comprehend. It was very nice.”
When asked what their favorite parts were, Stanley said that he liked Welcoming Spring, and that he thought it was a very beautiful composition.
The warmth of spring is a welcome blessing after winter’s cold in this festive, floral scene. Quick footwork, crisp movements, and stunning bursts of color form the basis of these women’s fan dance and its sense of sheer delight. Its exuberant spirit and marking of the season personify China’s folk dance tradition.
Tatiana said, "I love the fans, and I liked the dancers with the colorful skirts—that was amazing, they had a lot of energy, and it was just beautiful."
"I especially like the work with drums, and the male composition coming out with drums, and how there is an integration of different groups of people … when one group joins the other … and it’s all intregrated with music and dance," Stanley added.
“It’s very creative. Full of life, very historical, very cultural, very intense, and very beautiful,” said Stanley.
Tatiana then responded with, “I think it shows how really rich the culture is and how magnificent it is. It touches on all aspects of life, it’s just really impressive.”
